Psylocke (Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock) has one of the wildest backstories in comic history.
Origins and Early Days
Writer Chris Claremont and artist Herb Trimpe created Psylocke. She first appeared in December 1976 in Captain Britain #8. Back then, she was a blonde British aristocrat with basic telepathic powers. She later crossed over into mainstream Marvel Comics and joined the X-Men.
The Psychic Ninja Makeover
Everything changed in 1989. The Hand captured Betsy and brainwashed her. They swapped her mind into the body of a Japanese assassin named Kwannon.
She debuted as a psychic ninja in The Uncanny X-Men #256. This change added:
- Lethal martial arts skills
- Her signature “psychic knife”
- Massive pop-culture stardom in the 1990s
Resolving Racial Baggage
Marvel recognized the awkward racial baggage of a white character living in an East Asian body. In 2018, Marvel separated Betsy and Kwannon into two distinct characters.
This split led to the miniseries Psylocke: Ninja. Created by writer Tim Seeley and artist Nico Leon, the flashback tale explores Betsy’s early days as a brainwashed assassin fighting Elektra.
Live-Action Debut
Psylocke made her live-action film debut in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016). Olivia Munn portrayed the character. Munn is also famous for her work in HBO’s The Newsroom, The Predator, and The Daily Show.
