MAY 2026: Scott Snyder is running the entire comic book industry

If May 2026 taught me anything from behind the counter of my comic shop, it’s this: writer Scott Snyder is currently running the entire comic book industry.
Specifically, we are all just living in his creative world.
When February hit, I mistakenly thought we had already seen the absolute peak of the imprint’s hype. However, May proved that DC’s momentum is not a fluke. Instead, it looks like a hostile corporate takeover. Between Snyder’s masterclass pacing on his flagship title and the massive launch of the new spinoffs, my subscriber pull-lists were completely overwhelmed. Consequently, DC snatched four of the top five spots on my register charts this month.
If you want to know what blew the roof off my shop, here are the top three books driving the massive DC Absolute Universe sales right now.
1. Absolute Batman #20 (DC Comics)
- Creative Team: Writer Scott Snyder and Artist Nick Dragotta
- Sales Impact: Unstoppable. The issue retained the #1 spot overall in direct market units, pulling estimated orders north of 150,000+ units.
The Counter View: I have been pitching Scott Snyder books to my customers since his Court of Owls days. Yet, what he and Dragotta are doing on this series is on another level entirely. Issue #20 was a flat-out masterpiece. Reeling from a brutal loss, Bruce Wayne must face a terrifying, reinvented iteration of the Robins out for his blood. Therefore, my customers were practically arguing at the counter over the game-changing ending. It remains the most requested book on my store’s pull-list roster.
2. Absolute Green Arrow #1 (DC Comics)
- Creative Team: Writer Pornsak Pichetshote and Artist Javier Rodríguez
- Sales Impact: This debut locked into the #2 spot overall, moving an estimated 120,000+ units in initial orders.
The Counter View: When DC announced they were expanding past Snyder’s initial core launch, some regular collectors worried about line fatigue. Fortunately, Absolute Green Arrow #1 completely shut those doubts down. Pichetshote and Rodríguez delivered a grounded, high-voltage murder mystery. Following thispremise, someone is systematically executing corrupt billionaires with green arrows, and Dinah Lance is on the case. Snyder built the blueprint for these DC Absolute Universe sales, and watching other elite creators build inside his house is pure joy.
3. Batman #9 (DC Comics)
- Creative Team: Writer Matt Fraction and Artist Jorge Jiménez
- Sales Impact: Secured the #3 spot overall, clearing roughly 100,000+ units.
The Counter View: Having main-universe Batman sit right behind two Absolute powerhouses is a huge win for the direct market. Fraction turned up the heat in issue #9, where Commissioner Vandal Savage initiates “Operation Peregrine.” As a result, militarized squads hunt Batman through the streets after a shady deal with Mayor Isley. This proved to my local regulars that main-line continuity does not have to play second fiddle to alternate universes.
What the Sales Register Tells Us About the Future
May’s massive numbers forecast a few clear trends for the rest of 2026:
- The High-Stakes Model Wins: Readers do not want safe company resets anymore. Snyder proved that if you take big risks and strip heroes down to their rawest elements, fans will show up in droves. In short, expect every publisher in the market to try and replicate this high-consequence universe design.
- Street-Level Noir Moves the Needle: Look at the top books this month to see that cosmic, world-ending multiverse fatigue is real. Instead, my customers are spending their hard-earned cash on gritty, detective-driven stakes with actual body counts.
- The Snyder Effect Spreads: Launching spinoffs can be risky for a shop owner’s inventory. Moreover, this month proved that if a pitch is sharp and anchored to a strong core architect, readers will treat a expansion issue as a non-negotiable, day-one pickup.
